We just love GOLDEN MONKEYS! Cercopithecus mitis ssp. kandti

All AoC classes this week begin with Eric’s instruction on how to draw a mountain gorilla. Then Fahad follows with instruction on how to draw a second animal one can find in the nearby Virunga Forest. Shingiro adults studied Forest Buffaloes and now Saturday’s students consider Golden Monkeys.

Pictures made by NTIRENGANYA.

Found in the bamboo forests, this primate weighs 10 to 15 pounds.

Habitat loss through agriculture, wood extraction, human encroachment and illegal harvesting continue to be the major threats to this animal.

Thank you Theresa and Professor Minor for your recent comments. I’ll share here the quote Vernon Minor shared with me.
All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once one grows up. Pablo Picasso.

Julie, what an education for all of us, learning about these species who share the forest with the gorillas. I know your students will be better stewards of their environment, then my generation has been. Thank you!

Julie, I’ve been following along and greatly enjoying the golden monkey, water buffalo, and gorilla pictures drawn by your students. Have you ever thought of holding an “auction” of some of the art in order to generate donations? Perhaps the class could vote on the best student drawing, which you could then post here and allow your readers to bid on it. I bet most of your readers would even add on a little extra to their donation for postage, and then the drawing could be mailed to the winner. I know, personally, that I would love to see Bizimana’s beautiful drawing on my wall!
